ARC LIEF (Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities) grants - 2009
November 18, 2008
Congratulations to Professor Alan Harvey, Dr Giles Plant and Dr Marc Ruitenberg on their participation in 2 of the 5 Australian Research Council LIEF grants received by the University of Western Australia. Project 1: A Core Western Australian Cell Sorting Facility - Ultra Small Objects and Rare Cell Populations
This new generic capacity to rapidly isolate structures smaller than the cell has extraordinarily wide application in the biological sciences. Making this capacity widely accessible through a core facility to the Western Australian research community will generate research outcomes of national and community benefit. Sorting chromosomes to better understand genetic abnormalities and sorting bacteria to better understand and reduce bacterial infection will result in improvements in human health. Sorting parasites, bacteria and immune cells will lead to new animal vaccines for parasites and diseases such as bird flu. Sorting marine plankton will lead to more sustainable marine ecosystems and fisheries.

Project 2: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Microimaging and Relaxometry Facility
Many of the research projects to be supported by the facility are dedicated to improving our understanding of conditions and diseases that detrimentally affect many in our community. Projects investigating Alzheimer's disease, the central nervous system and its ability to repair, cancer and associated therapeutic treatments are some of the areas that will benefit from access to this equipment. The new facility will also provide unique insights into aspects of fundamental plant biology, with implications for improving crop productivity and better managing our natural ecosystems. The community will also benefit from the development and testing within the facility of new diagnostic tools and markers for a range of diseases.

ARC Discovery project grant success
October 17 2008
Congratulations to the following research groups on obtaining an ARC Discovery Grant
Project: Using magnetic nanotechnology to aid recovery from neurotrauama
Nanotechnology is an exciting new field that holds great promise to solve challenging health issues including neurotrauma associated with brain and spinal cord injury. Current methods to deliver drugs and stimulate tissue repair after neurotrauma do not work effectively and new approaches are urgently need. The recently established research team brings together expertise in nanotechnology and neuroscience to develop new, safe ways to deliver drugs and stimulate tissue repair after neurotrauma, and provide quality research training. Specifically designed nanomaterials will deliver drugs slowly over time and act as scaffolds to stop cells dying and stimulate them to restore broken connections and work again.

Project: Ethics and aesthetics as criteria for innovation: A design research study of biological art Project Title and digital architecture
The project will contribute to the goal of promoting innovation in three areas. First, the project will amplify Australia's individual strengths in biological art and digital architecture by creating a network of artists and designers in which each discipline is stimulated by the concerns and practices of the other. Second, the project will explain innovation in such networks, by identifying activities that lead to innovation. Such an explanation will improve the nation's capacity to promote innovation in targeted fields. Third, the project will test and develop collaboration tools designed to support the activities identified as leading to innovation, as information technology is a primary enabler for operating across such networks. Whitfield Fellowship Awards 2008
April 2008
Congratulations to Jana Vukovic who was awarded a Whitfield Fellowship. The Whitfield Fellowships provide a bridge between the submission of the PhD thesis for examination and a candidate’s first research career position. They are designed to enable candidates to write up publications during the period of thesis examination and to prepare a grant application for a future position. Selection is made on the basis of the applicant's track record, proposed publications and a one page description for a potential grant proposal. Jana's success in obtaining this prestigious award comes on the heels of Nicole Koehler's success last year. The School is very fortunate to have had success in two consecutive years - but not unexpected given the quality of our students!
