About the School
Anatomy and Human Biology is the integrated study of humans and includes the disciplines of human biology, anatomy and cell biology. |
The holistic approach to the study of humans ranges from evolutionary study with fossil material to molecular biological studies of cell function. This is a large and very diverse School which teaches in excess of 20 different units to science, medical, health science, dental and anthropology students.
Studies in Anatomy and Human Biology can lead to careers in administration, teaching, industry, science journalism, government and a variety of biomedical, technical, technological and health related professions, as well as academic careers in teaching and research in Anatomy and Human Biology itself and related biomedical disciplines. | | | Human Biology examines how the biology of humans is influenced by their natural and cultural environments. Study areas include Biological Anthropology, Ecology and Genetics and Evolution. Anatomy examines how the body is organised and how structure is related to function. It examines the body at the microscopic level. Study areas include Functional and Comparative Morphology, Bone Architecture, Reproductive Biology, Endocrinology and Neurobiology. Cell Biology examines structure and function of human cells and tissues. Areas of study include Cell Death, Immunology, Eye Pathology, Muscle Diseases, Muscle Transplantation and Regeneration and Cancer. The School is well equipped for the latest methods of biological research, including molecular biology and computer assisted measuring techniques. There is a specialist facility for the dissection of human material. and excellent laboratory facilities for histology, tissue culture and radioisotope work. An integrated histology and biological imaging service is available through CellCentral. The School also hosts SymbioticA, which explores the symbiosis of art and biological science, particularly tissue culture and the centre for Integrated Human Studies, which brings together the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities to focus on the nature and future of humankind. | Research activities encompass: Reproductive Biology & Endocrinology Cancer Biology Neurobiology & Ocular Biology Cell & Tissue Regeneration Functional & Clinical Anatomy Evolutionary Biology & Biological Anthropology Computer Imaging & Biological Modelling Forensic Science |
